A Mood Disorder Overview

Mood disorders are a category of mental health conditions characterized

by persistent + significant disturbances in mood, which can affect a person’s emotional state, thoughts behaviors + overall wellbeing. These disorders can significantly impact an individual’s ability to function in their daily life + can vary in severity.



Here are some common mood disorders:


1. Major depression (MDD): Also known as depression, MDD is characterized by persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and a loss of interest or pleasure in activities. Other symptoms may include changes in appetite, sleep disturbances, fatigue, difficulty concentrating + thoughts of self-harm or suicide.


2. Bipolar Disorder: This disorder involves cycling between periods of depression + mania or hypomania. During manic episodes, individuals may experience elevated mood, increased energy, impulsivity, + a decreased need for sleep. Hypomania is a milder form of mania.


3. Persistent Depressive Disorder (PDD): Formerly known as dysthymia, PDD is a chronic form of depression. It involves long-term feelings of sadness, low self-esteem, + a lack of interest in daily activities. Symptoms are less severe than MDD but typically last for two years or longer.


4. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD): This is a subtype of depression that occurs with the changing seasons, usually starting in the fall + continuing through the winter. It is thought to be related to reduced exposure to sunlight + may cause symptoms such as low mood, fatigue, increased sleep, + changes in appetite.


5. Anxiety Disorders: While not solely a mood disorders anxiety disorders often co-occur with mood disorders. Conditions like Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Panic Disorder, + Social Anxiety Disorder involve excessive + persistent anxiety that can impact mood + daily functioning.



Treatment for mood disorders can include a combination of psychotherapy, medication, + lifestyle changes as well as support from healthcare professionals.
